Overview
The UK Innovator Founder Visa is for entrepreneurs who want to set up and run an innovative business in the UK. To apply, you must first get your business idea endorsed by an approved endorsing body.
Who this route is for
This route is suitable if you:
- Are planning to start a new business in the UK (not join one that’s already trading)
- Have a business idea that meets the Home Office criteria (innovation + growth)
- Can prepare a strong business plan and supporting evidence for endorsement
Business idea requirements (what endorsing bodies look for)
Your business idea must be:
- New (you cannot join a business that is already trading)
- Innovative (original and different from what’s already on the market)
- Viable (realistic and capable of being delivered)
- Scalable (clear plan for growth, including job creation and expansion)
Endorsement (core requirement)
You must get an endorsement from an organisation that is officially authorised to issue endorsements for the Innovator Founder route.
Financial requirement (maintenance)
You generally need to show at least £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days before you apply (and for some in-country applications, this can apply if you’ve been in the UK for less than 1 year).
English language requirement
You must meet the English language requirement and provide proof in an accepted way (route rules apply).
Typical documents (common examples)
Most applicants prepare:
- Passport/identity document
- Bank evidence for the maintenance requirement
- Proof of English language
- TB certificate (if required for your country)
- Endorsement letter and business plan/evidence (as required by the endorsing body)
How long you can stay and extensions
If you switch into this route, you can usually stay for 3 years, and there is no limit on the number of extensions (subject to meeting requirements).
Bringing your family
You may be able to bring your partner and children, either included in your application or applying separately (depending on the application process).
