Visa Process

Confirm what you need: restore status vs extend before expiry.
If extending, apply early (IRCC suggests at least 30 days before a work permit expires).
If you applied to extend/change a work permit before it expired, you may stay in Canada while it’s processed (maintained status).
If restoring status, check eligibility and understand that work/study permissions may not continue until restoration is approved (case-dependent).
If IRCC raises fraud/misrepresentation concerns, respond carefully—IRCC notes serious outcomes including refusal and a ban of at least 5 years in fraud cases.
If you were issued a removal order, confirm whether you need ARC to return and prepare supporting explanations and documents.
What is “restoration of status”?
It’s a process that may let you restore your temporary resident status (visitor/student/worker) after you’ve lost it, if you meet IRCC requirements.
What is an “extension” for visitors?
To stay longer as a visitor, you apply for a visitor record—and IRCC states a visitor record is not a visa.
If I applied before my work permit expired, can I stay (and work)?
IRCC says you can stay in Canada while a decision is made (maintained status) and, in many cases, you may continue working under the same conditions.
What happens if IRCC believes there was fraud or misrepresentation?
IRCC lists consequences that can include refusal, removal, and being banned for at least 5 years in fraud situations.
What does “inadmissible” mean?
IRCC explains you may be inadmissible for reasons like security, criminal, or medical grounds, and an officer decides admissibility when you apply or at entry.
What is ARC (Authorization to Return to Canada)?
If you received a removal order, you may need an ARC to return—depending on the type of removal order and whether you complied with it.
